Paris Tree Service is a working tree trimming crew, not an office that subcontracts the work out. The arborist who prices your job is one of the people who turns up to do it, and that is deliberate: quoting a tree you will have to climb yourself concentrates the mind.
We are fully insured, and we will put copies of the paperwork in front of you before anybody puts a rope in your tree. Ask every contractor who quotes you for the same thing, and be careful with anybody who is reluctant.
We work across Paris and the surrounding County of Brant — the old streets on both sides of the Grand, the newer subdivisions on the higher ground, and the properties out along the concessions.
Tree trimming is learned on a rope, not in a classroom. Ours was learned on southern Ontario trees: the big shade maples in old town gardens, the oaks on the sand hills above the river, the silver maples on the flats that split at the union sooner or later, and lately an enormous amount of dead ash.
Emerald ash borer changed what this work looks like in the Grand River watershed. It arrived here in 2010, and the conservation authority alone has since taken down more than sixteen thousand ash across its own land. Everything left standing on private property is somebody's problem to solve, and a lot of what we do now is solving it safely on trees that are no longer safe to climb.
Most trees are worth keeping, and most of them are cut down too soon.
A tree given regular tree trimming at twenty is a much cheaper tree at sixty. Fifteen minutes on a young tree — removing a competing leader, cutting out a union that is going to include bark — is the highest-value tree trimming there is, and almost nobody buys it.
Topping is not tree trimming. It is damage sold as tree trimming, and we will not do it whatever anyone offers.
And when a tree genuinely has to come out, that is not a failure. It is a decision, and it should be followed by planting something that suits the space, so that in eighty years there is still a tree there.
Somebody attends before any tree trimming is quoted. Always. No prices off photographs, no prices over the phone, no crew sent to a tree nobody has looked at.
Everything goes in writing: which trees, which limbs, how much comes off, where the brush and the wood go, and what is excluded.
The site gets set up before a saw starts, and it gets cleared before we leave. Brush chipped, wood cut and stacked or removed, ground raked and blown.
We say when work is not needed. That costs us a job now and again and it is still the right call, because the alternative is being the company that sold somebody a removal they did not need.
Climbing gear and rigging line do most of the tree trimming, because most of Paris cannot be felled — the lots are narrow, the houses sit close, and the trees are large.
A bucket where the tree cannot be climbed, and a crane where the tree cannot be climbed and the pieces cannot be lowered. Dead ash is the usual reason for both.
A chipper for the brush and a grinder for the stumps, so the job finishes in one visit rather than leaving a pile behind for somebody else.

Tree trimming and pruning is most of what we do in Paris, and most tree trimming is not about making a tree smaller. It is about taking weight off the wrong places, getting the dead material out, and cutting so the tree can seal what we cut.

Dead branch removal is the tree trimming job people put off longest, and the one that gives least warning. A dead limb does not creak, lean or drop leaves to tell you it is going. It stays exactly where it is until the day it does not, which is why dead branch removal gets booked after the fact rather than before.

Emergency storm damage cleanup is the call that comes at five in the morning, and it is the one part of tree trimming nobody plans for. A tree across the drive, a limb through the garage roof, a trunk resting on the car, or a branch left hanging over the front door with nothing holding it. Tree removal is the last option on the list, not the first, and we would rather talk you out of a tree removal than sell you one you did not need. But a dead, split, badly leaning or structurally finished tree beside a house is past what tree trimming can fix, and pretending otherwise costs more in the end.

Crown thinning and canopy reduction are the two kinds of tree trimming that make a large tree less of a liability without taking it out. Thinning takes density out of the crown; canopy reduction takes size off the outside of it. They solve different problems, they are constantly confused, and neither one is topping.

Tree cabling and bracing is how you keep a structurally suspect tree that is otherwise healthy and worth keeping, once tree trimming alone will not do it. A cable is a flexible support fitted high in the crown between two limbs or two stems; a brace is a rigid rod through a union that is already moving. Cabling and bracing limits movement, it does not repair the union.

Stump grinding and removal is the tree trimming job that turns a felled tree back into usable garden. A grinder takes the stump down below ground level in chips, so the area can be levelled, turfed, planted or paved. Stump grinding is quoted separately from taking the tree down.
