A tree seals a wound from a ring of tissue where the branch joins the trunk, called the branch collar. When a cut is made just outside that collar, the tree grows over the wound and the damage stops there.
When a cut is made flush with the trunk, the collar is removed and the wound cannot close properly. Decay then works its way into the trunk over several years. This is one of the most common faults we see on trees that have been trimmed by someone else.
