Stump grinding and removal is the tree trimming job that turns a felled tree back into usable garden. A grinder takes the stump down below ground level in chips, so the area can be levelled, turfed, planted or paved. Stump grinding is quoted separately from taking the tree down.

Grinding is a machine with a toothed wheel that cuts the stump into chips, working down and outward. It leaves a hole full of chip and sawdust and it disturbs very little around it.
Digging a stump out with an excavator takes the root plate as well, which sounds better and usually is not. It leaves a crater, it wrecks the surrounding lawn, and on the sandy ground around Paris it takes far more soil with it than people expect. It also costs considerably more.
Stump grinding and removal by machine is the right answer for nearly every garden stump. Excavation is for where the ground has to be built on.
That depends entirely on what is going there afterwards, and it should be in the quote.
For lawn, 150 to 200mm below grade is normally enough. Grass roots do not go far and the chip can be topped with soil and seeded.
For a flower bed you want more, because you need actual soil depth to plant into.
For paving, a shed base or a fence line, more again, and the surface roots usually have to be chased out too — which is a separate cost and worth agreeing before anybody starts.
If nothing is going there and you just want the trip hazard gone, less is fine and it is cheaper.
Stump grinding and removal produces a surprising volume of chip — considerably more than the stump appeared to be, because it is all air now.
By default we backfill the hole with it and rake it level. It will settle over the first year and usually needs topping up, which is normal rather than a fault.
If you want soil instead, the chip has to be barrowed out and soil brought in, and that is a separate line on the quote. Do not plant directly into fresh chip. It ties up nitrogen as it breaks down, and things planted into it sulk for a season or two.
Where the services are. Gas, water, hydro, telecoms and irrigation all get cut by stump grinders, and the machine does not know they are there. If anything has been run through that part of the garden, tell us.
What the access is. Grinders come in sizes. The small ones walk through a standard garden gate on tracks; the big ones do not, and they clear a large stump in a fraction of the time. If the stump is in a back garden, the gate width decides which machine turns up and how long stump grinding takes.
Whether there is stone, wire or fencing embedded in or near the stump. Old fence line stumps often have wire grown through them, and hitting it ruins a set of teeth and stops the stump grinding and removal dead.

Dead branch removal is the tree trimming job people put off longest, and the one that gives least warning. A dead limb does not creak, lean or drop leaves to tell you it is going. It stays exactly where it is until the day it does not, which is why dead branch removal gets booked after the fact rather than before.

A tree across the drive, a limb through the garage roof, a trunk resting on the car, or a branch left hanging over the front door with nothing holding it. Tree removal is the last option on the list, not the first, and we would rather talk you out of a tree removal than sell you one you did not need. But a dead, split, badly leaning or structurally finished tree beside a house is past what tree trimming can fix, and pretending otherwise costs more in the end.

Crown thinning and canopy reduction are the two kinds of tree trimming that make a large tree less of a liability without taking it out. Thinning takes density out of the crown; canopy reduction takes size off the outside of it. They solve different problems, they are constantly confused, and neither one is topping.

Tree cabling and bracing is how you keep a structurally suspect tree that is otherwise healthy and worth keeping, once tree trimming alone will not do it. A cable is a flexible support fitted high in the crown between two limbs or two stems; a brace is a rigid rod through a union that is already moving. Cabling and bracing limits movement, it does not repair the union.
