Tree cabling and bracing are two ways of supporting a tree that has a weak point but is otherwise worth keeping. A cable is a flexible steel line installed high in the tree, which limits how far two stems can move apart in the wind.
A brace is a threaded steel rod passed through a split, which holds the two halves together. Neither repairs the weakness. Both are intended to extend the safe life of a tree that would otherwise need to come down.
The most common candidate for tree cabling and bracing in this area is a multi-stemmed silver maple. These trees are widespread on the flats along the Nith and the Grand, and many of them divide into two or three stems low on the trunk.
Where bark has become trapped inside that division, the stems are not truly joined. The join weakens a little further every year as the stems grow heavier, and an ice load can open it.
Tree cabling is fitted high in the tree, roughly two thirds of the way from the fork toward the ends of the branches. At that height it limits movement effectively without putting a heavy load on any one point.
The cable is designed to allow some movement. A tree that cannot move at all does not develop the strength it needs, so the aim is to limit the extremes rather than hold the tree rigid.
In most cases, yes. Tree cabling and bracing works best alongside a canopy reduction, because reducing the crown lowers the load the hardware has to carry.
Installing hardware on its own means the steel is holding weight that could have been removed with a saw for less money. We will normally recommend doing both, and explain the cost of each.
Hardware is not always appropriate, and we would rather say so than sell you an installation that will not help:
- If there is decay at the base of the trunk, cabling the crown does nothing for the real problem - If a fork has already split a long way, a cable alone has usually come too late - If the tree is young, correcting the fork with pruning is cheaper and lasts longer - If the tree is in poor health overall, removal is often the more sensible choice
Yes, and inspection is the part most tree cabling and bracing quotes leave out. Steel corrodes over time, and a growing tree gradually swells around the anchor points until they are hidden.
An installation left unchecked for fifteen years may no longer be supporting anything, while the crown above has continued to grow as though it were. We include an inspection interval with every quote so you know what you are committing to.
